SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT BRAIN TRAINING APP

NeuroLogic Brain Training App

This was a group project undertaken for the Mobile Application Development module of my Software Development degree.

As a group of five students, we were to develop an idea for a mobile application, use appropriate techniques to gather requirements for it, and then create low, medium and high fidelity prototypes, with testing and evaluation between each iteration.

During idea generation, some group members had hoped to make a game (which was not a permitted project) and another group member had recent experience of psychometric testing in a job application scenario. This led us to the idea of a brain-training app: an app with training for psychometric tests and brain function, also with fun and stimulating puzzles designed to get users thinking logically and sharpening skills such as memory and pattern recognition.

Brainstorming took place to generate ideas for app themes and content, alongside user research of interviews and surveys with other students to gather requirements.

Low, medium and high-fidelity prototypes were produced, with appropriate evaluation (including accessibility and usability heuristics), testing, feedback and revisions carried out and incorporated in the next stage.

The medium fidelity prototype was produced in Figma, by myself and one other team member. The app consists of four main sections: 'Practice', 'Your Brain', 'Tests' and 'Account'. I took on the large 'Practice' section of the app, where a user can partake in a number of puzzles and fun challenges.

Below is a screen recording of the Figma prototype in use. Video has no audio.

The high fidelity prototype was produced in Android Studio by myself and three other team members.

The Practice section is accessed either via a roadmap 'brain map' of activities, or by a menu that allows you to choose a specific category.

The practice activities in the practice section include memory challenges, pattern completion challenges, word games, maths games and sudoku.

The 'Tests' section of the app has activities for logical reasoning, verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, spatial reasoning and situational reasoning.
